Mediating Effect of Smartphone Addiction on the Relationship between Stress and Social Isolation of Young Adults during the COVID-19

Abstract
Increased multidimensional stress and increased social isolation due to COVID-19 have been raised as major mental health concerns for young adults. The purpose of this study is to examine whether stress affects social isolation among young adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, and to examine whether stress affects social isolation by mediating smartphone addiction. To this end, the data of the J city Mental Health Status and Needs Survey (2020), which was investigated in 2020 when COVID-19 was severe , was analyzed and data from a total of 473 young adults aged 20 to 39 who responded to the questionnaire were used for analysis. This data were analyzed using Stata/ MP 17.0. The results of this study are as follows. First, it was found that the stress of young adults during the COVID-19 period affects the social isolation. Second, the smartphone addiction was found to partially mediate the relationship between the stress and the social isolation in young adults. Based on these results , intervention plans to prevent the social isolation of young adults were suggested.
